About Donny

Donny Yap is often mistaken as Guy Gavriel Kay’s marketing agent. His incessant whining to get people to read GGK caused Internet blackouts in various parts of the world, elicited cries of anguish from book forums everywhere, and was largely responsible for the rise in hip-hop music. When he’s not reading, this 34 year old from Kuala Lumpur spends his time in the IT world getting people to do his bidding, mostly unsuccessfully.

His reading tastes spans across a wide spectrum, but his first love is mostly in speculative fiction, particularly fantasy. He also reads ‘other stuff’, as he puts it, and is now at a phase where he likes non-fiction work related to history/politics. Oh, and he likes Calvin and Hobbes.

Authors whose work you hunt down the moment they come out: Guy Gavriel Kay, George RR Martin, Lois McMaster Bujold, David Mitchell

Some of your favourite books: Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester, A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Forever War by Joe Haldeman, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin, Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay. Hmm… too many to list, actually.

Your definition of a good book: Anything that makes me think long after I finish it. I don’t care what you are: non-fiction, contemporary fiction, sf/fantasy, popular chart-toppers or even *gasp* westerns, if you’re good, you’re good.
